Pregnancy Testing
Juneau Family Health and Birth Center offers FREE and confidential pregnancy
testing to anyone in the community. Please come in as ask the receptionist.
For more information, please feel free to contact
us.
Prenatal Exams
The vast majority of your prenatal visit time will be spent talking.
The prenatal visit is a time for learning, exploring issues, preparing
for parenting, and dealing with the social stresses of life as they
relate to the pregnancy. We also have a large lending library available
to you.
Twenty-four hour phone support is available. We take all of your concerns
seriously.
The first prenatal visit will last approximately one and one half hour.
Subsequent prenatal visits are generally 45 minutes to 1 hour long.
All modern prenatal testing is available to our clients, however, all
testing is discussed in detail so that you and your family can make
an informed decision.
Labor and Birth
Once admitted to the Birth Center, your family will have a private birthing room
until you leave. In addition to the birth room, there are kitchen facilities
and a family room.
Any family, friends that the you want at the birth are welcomed. We
can and have easily incorporated fathers, partners and children into
the birthing process. When appropriate, fathers or partners may choose
to "catch" the baby; and many women, after laboring in the
Jacuzzi tub, will also choose to give birth there. We take birth plans
very seriously, and try to honor your wishes while maintaining safety
for you and your baby.
Moms, families and babies are never separated. Baby exams are done right
next to you with everything being explained as we go. Early breastfeeding
is encouraged and supported. Before leaving the Birth Center, you are
taught what to expect in the next days and weeks and how to monitor
your baby's health. While the length of time a family remains in the
birth center after the birth of the baby varies from family to family,
the typical length of stay is 6 hours. Most are eager to return
home and settle in with their new baby.
Postpartum
Your Midwife from the Juneau Family Birth Center will visit your home
for a series of three postpartum exams. We have found that this time
to check in helps tremendously in establishing breastfeeding and helping
the family with anything unexpected. You will then have an office visit
at 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks and 4 weeks. A 6 week postpartum visit is
scheduled to do family planning and to make sure that all is back to
normal. This schedule is flexible and could be adjusted according to
the your needs.
