Our Story

In July of 1996, the Juneau Family Birth Center was incorporated as a nonprofitorganization to build what had been a long time dream for many families in Juneau and throughout Southeast Alaska; a community birthing center dedicated to the midwifery model of care. The midwifery model of care is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life process and how they occur can affect a family's relationships and parenting abilities. Parents who are empowered by the process make healthier decisions and have more confidence in themselves.

The Juneau Family Birth Center opened April 1, 1998 and is located at 3225 Hospital Drive, in Juneau's medical campus. The birth center building project itself was a labor of love, built by over 70 volunteers. The community donated many of the building supplies. The center provides a home-like atmosphere, within minutes of the hospital if additional medical care is needed. This birthing center allows families more options in choosing the type of prenatal care, childbirth education, and, ultimately, the type of childbirth they want.

Kaye Kanne, the founding midwife of the Juneau Family Birth Center, brings her experience and commitment as a midwife in Juneau since 1984 to the Juneau Family Birth Center. The birthing center is staffed with Certified Direct-Entry Midwives, a profession that has proven in Alaska that women can achieve low cost healthcare during the childbearing year while improving the quality of the experience. The Juneau Family Birth Center has met a need in the Juneau community since April 1998. Families have been very happy with their experiences and have expressed their gratitude that the option exists.
