January 2011 -
Rasmuson Foundation
The Rasmuson Foundation recently awarded us $30,000 to support our Executive Director, Kaye Kanne, in taking a four month sabbatical.  The Rasmuson Foundation Sabbatical Program is designed to provide time away from the job for nonprofit and tribal leaders to engage in activities for personal renewal or professional growth. The Foundation believes that nonprofit CEOs/executive directors and tribal administrators better serve their organization when they have extended opportunities to reflect on their work, gain insight into what they want to accomplish in their careers, learn better ways to run their organizations, and renew their personal energy.  Kaye will embark on her sabbatical in April and is planning to split her time between personal development, her family (parents and grandkids), and some well deserved rest. Thank you Rasmuson Foundation, for investing in strengthening our organization and preparing us for our future.

United Way 'Day of Caring' Volunteers
Thank you to the participants in the United Way's 'Day of Caring' - who came out to our facility in the rain and planted many, many tulip bulbs! We will think of you each spring when our building blooms.... and thanks to United Way of SE Alaska for hosting such an event and getting community members out doing good work with nonprofits!

October 2010-
Diana Rossmiller
On October 5, Diana Rossmiller, long time volunteer here at Juneau Family Health and Birth Center, was awarded United Way's 'Volunteer of the Year'.
Diana Rossmiller has volunteered her time and energy to the Juneau Family Health and Birth Center since it's inception in 1996. She is a founding member of the Board of Directors, working tirelessly to promote the mission of our organization because she believes that woman and their families need a quiet place to birth their babies; where women are respected, given privacy, and trusted to do the work surrounding birth.
Through years of growth, expansion, and evolution, Diana remained a constant source of support to our Executive Director, Kaye, and the mission of JFHBC. Her faith that 'this can be done' helped to make every step along the way possible, and she provided a clear sense of realism to each project. And of course she stepped up every time, unfailingly, when her energy and time were needed.
The most remarkable thing about Diana is that she does everything quietly, selflessly, without any thought of recognition or self interest. Despite a busy family and work schedule, she, without hesitation, steps up to action whenever needed, with her support, time, energy, and knowledge of our organization.. She does this without expectation or question, or any thought of 'why me?'. She is just consistently, quietly, unfailingly there.
Diana's dedication provides a strong example of the value of humble volunteerism, and the way that one person can guide an entire organization and affect change on a community scale.
Thank you again Diana - for the many ways you have enriched our organization. And thank you United Way for honoring her with community recognition.
